He may not be a familiar name to everyone now but during his life he was as celebrated as Maxim Gorky and Leo Tolstoy. He was a bestselling novelist who at the same time expressed his extreme political views through his fiction.
Andreyev's novels are partly forgotten today but due to some excellent translations, many of which have been pulled together in the work from which this extract has been taken, his short stories live on.
